S&P 500 E-Mini Futures Market News and Commentary

Stocks Extend Losses on Cautious Powell Remarks

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -2.38%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -1.55%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is down -3.29%.  June E-mini S&P futures (ESM25) are down -2.16%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM25) are down -3.20%. 

Stock indexes today are trading broadly lower, hitting session lows after afternoon remarks from Fed Chair Jerome Powell at a Chicago event. Observing that tariffs “are likely to move us away from our near-term goals,” Powell warned, “We may find ourselves in the challenging scenario in which our dual-mandate goals are in tension.” 

Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, who is not a member of the policy-setting committee, said in separate remarks today, “If the economy should falter and inflation decline, then it may be appropriate to ease policy by lowering the federal funds rate from its current level of 4-1/4 to 4-1/2 percent, perhaps even quickly.” Hammack tempered her dovish tone by adding that...
