
Live cattle futures are trading with 12 to 40 cent gains so far on Monday. Cash trade was slow last week, with sales reported at $192-193 in the South, up $1-2, and $196-197 in the North, $1-2 higher. Feeder cattle futures are up 20 to 52 cents at Monday’s midday. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was down $2.45 from the day prior at $258.32 on December 26.
USDA wholesale Boxed Beef prices were higher in the Monday morning report. Choice boxes were up $3.00 at $325.38/cwt and Select $2.96 higher @ $294.09. USDA estimated federally inspected cattle slaughter at 434,000 head last week through Saturday. That is down 66,521 head from the same week last year.
