
Live cattle futures are posting $1.20 to $1.35 gains across most contracts on Monday. Cash trade last week was reported at $196-197 in the South and $200 in the North. Feeder cattle futures are back up $1.55 to $1.75 at midday. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was up $3.99 from the day prior at $265.76 on January 2. The weekly OKC feeder cattle auction shows an estimated 7,500 head for sale today, which is up slightly from the previous sale a couple weeks ago and well below last year.
USDA wholesale Boxed Beef prices were higher in the Monday morning report. Choice boxes were up $2 at $327.24/cwt and Select $4.40 higher @ $301.12. USDA estimated federally inspected cattle slaughter for last week at 498,000 head. That is up 54,000 head from last week but down 44,462 head from the same week last year.
