Sugar Prices Finish Higher as Rain Prospects Ease in Brazil

March NY world sugar #11 (SBH25) Wednesday closed up +0.14 (+0.63%), and December London ICE white sugar #5 (SWZ24) closed up +5.70 (+1.01%).

Sugar prices Wednesday posted moderate gains due to reduced near-term prospects for rain in Brazil's Center-South, the country's main sugar-producing region.  Meteorologist Climatempo now forecasts scattered rain for Brazil's Center-South this week, less than a previous forecast for widespread rain.

Gains in sugar were limited after the Brazilian real (^USDBRL) Wednesday fell to a 2-1/2 month low against the dollar.  The weaker real encourages export selling by Brazil's sugar producers.

On Monday, sugar prices fell to 1-week lows on negative carryover from last Friday when Unica reported that sugar output in Brazil's Center-South region during the first half of October rose +8% y/y to 2.443 MMT.  Also, cumulative 2024/25 Center-South sugar output through the first half of October rose +1.9% to 35.591 MMT.  Sugar prices are al...
