Coffee Prices Settle Lower as Liquidation Continues

March arabica coffee (KCH25) Tuesday closed down -0.55 (-0.19%), and January ICE robusta coffee (RMF25) closed down -208 (-4.30%).

Coffee prices on Tuesday added to Monday's sharp losses, with arabica coffee falling to a 1-1/2 week low and robusta dropping to a 2-1/2 week low.   Long liquidation pressures are slamming coffee prices after J. Ganes Consulting said that keeping a large amount of capital tied into a position in coffee may no longer be justified after ICE raised its margins for holding positions in coffee futures last week.Losses in robusta coffee accelerated Tuesday after the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association raised its 2024/25 Vietnam coffee production estimate to 28 million bags from an October estimate of 27 million bags.

Weakness in the Brazilian real (^USDBRL) is also bearish for coffee, with the real just above last Friday's record low against the dollar.  The weaker real encourages export selling from Brazil's coffee producers.
