Breakouts and Reversals

Thu, Apr 23rd, 2026

Breakouts and Trend Reversals, covering large-cap stocks (greater than 3B), are based on Bollinger Bands® which are a powerful volatility indicator, highlighting periods of extreme volatility, amplified as price breakouts. A breakout is a two standard deviation move from the 20-day moving average, and can be used to forecast both trends and trend reversals. Expanding bands before the move is an indication of support for a continuing trend, whereas contracting bands before a breakout can often be followed by a reversal, or mean reversion, where prices come back inside the bands towards the 20-day moving average.

Upside Breakouts and Downside Breakouts reflects Stocks who have just crossed outside the Bands, and Upside Reversals and Downside Reversals reflects Stocks who have just crossed back inside the bands. Featured on the display is the 20-day moving average, percentage distance from the moving average, and relative position of the Stock compared to the Bands (BB%) where for example a value of 120% means the Stock is 20% outside the upper, and similarly, -20% means the stock is 20% outside the lower Band.
