Cocoa #7 Futures Market News and Commentary

Cocoa Closes Higher on Cocoa Production Concerns in West Africa

December ICE NY cocoa (CCZ24) Friday closed up +107 (+1.41%), and December ICE London cocoa #7 (CAZ24) closed up +50 (+0.94%).

Cocoa prices recovered from early losses on Friday and settled moderately higher.  Lower cocoa production in the Ivory Coast, the world's largest producer, is bullish for cocoa prices.  Government data on Monday showed that Ivory Coast farmers shipped 1.71 MMT of cocoa to ports from October 1 to September 8, down by -28% from the same time last year.  

Signs of tighter cocoa supplies are bullish for prices as ICE-monitored cocoa inventories held in US ports have been trending lower for the past 15 months and fell to a 15-year low Friday of 2,310,688 bags.

Cocoa also has carryover support from Wednesday when the Ghana government raised the price that its cocoa regulator pays farmers for cocoa by 45% to $3,063 per ton for the 2024/25 season that began this month.  The price increase was below expectations of 65%, which may prompt Ghana's coco...
