Rain in Brazil Undercuts Coffee Prices

March arabica coffee (KCH25) today is down -2.30 (-0.71%), and March ICE robusta coffee (RMH25) is down -39 (-0.79%).

Coffee prices today are moderately lower, with arabica coffee falling to a 2-week low and robusta sliding to a 3-week low.  Coffee prices are under pressure after recent above-normal rain in Brazil eased drought concerns.  Somar Meteorologia reported today that Brazil's biggest arabica coffee growing area of Minas Gerais received 102.8 mm of rain last week, or 182% of the historical average.

An increase in current coffee supplies is also bearish for prices after ICE-monitored arabica coffee inventories last Monday climbed to a 2-1/2 year high of 990,395 bags.  Also, ICE-monitored robusta coffee inventories rose to a 2-1/2 month high of 4,286 lots last Friday.

Weakness in the Brazilian real (^USDBRL) is negative for coffee prices.  The real is down -0.64% today and is just above the recent record low against the dollar posted earlier this month.  The... Read more
