Coffee Futures Market News and Commentary

Dollar Weakness Spurs Short Covering in Coffee

March arabica coffee (KCH25) Wednesday closed up +8.20 (+2.77%), and January ICE robusta coffee (RMF25) closed up +144 (+3.11%).

Coffee prices rose sharply Wednesday, recovering some of the significant losses from Tuesday and Monday.  Wednesday's dollar weakness sparked some short-covering in coffee futures.  Robusta also rose Wednesday on reports that heavy rain in Vietnam is continuing to delay the coffee harvest.

This week, coffee prices plunged as arabica coffee fell to a 2-week low on Tuesday, and robusta dropped to a 3-week low.   Long liquidation emerged in coffee futures after J. Ganes Consulting said that keeping a large amount of capital tied into a position in coffee may no longer be justified after ICE raised its margins for holding positions in coffee futures last week.A bearish factor for robusta coffee was the action taken by the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association on Tuesday to raise its 2024/25 Vietnam coffee production estimate to 28 million bags from...
