Live Cattle Futures Market News and Commentary

Cattle Collapse on Wednesday

Live cattle futures posted losses of $1.50 to $2.30 in the front months on the day. Cash trade has yet to be reported this week. This morning’s Central Stockyards Fed Cattle Exchange online auction showed no sales on the 1,108 head offered, with bids of $190-195. Feeder cattle futures were down $2.25 to $2.95 on the day. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was up another 57 cents from the day prior at $272.86 on January 7.  

USDA wholesale Boxed Beef prices were higher in the Wednesday afternoon report, with the Chc/Sel spread widening to $21.72. Choice boxes were up $2.82 at $328.61/cwt, with Select $1.46 higher @ $306.89. USDA estimated federally inspected cattle slaughter for Wednesday at 122,000 head, taking the weekly total to 357,000 head. That is up 43,459 head from the same week last year.
