Cocoa #7 Futures Market News and Commentary

Cocoa Prices Climb on Reports Heavy Rains Damaged Ivory Coast Cocoa Trees

December ICE NY cocoa (CCZ24) today is up +183 (+2.19%), and December ICE London cocoa #7 (CAZ24) is up +137 (+1.90%).

Cocoa prices today are moderately higher, with London cocoa posting a 4-month nearest-futures high.  Cocoa is climbing due to the impact of recent heavy rains in the Ivory Coast on reports of high mortality rates of cocoa buds on trees because of the heavy rain.

Recent adverse weather in West Africa sparked a rally in cocoa prices.   NY cocoa rallied to a 2-1/2 month high last Friday, and London cocoa rallied to a 4-month high today after heavy rains in the Ivory Coast flooded fields, increasing disease risk and affecting crop quality.  Recently harvested cocoa beans from the Ivory Coast signal lower quality, with counts of about 105 beans per 100 grams.  The Ivory Coast cocoa regulator allows exporters to buy bean counts of 80 to 100 or slightly more for every 100 grams, with the best quality cocoa having the lower count.
