Coffee Futures Market News and Commentary

Coffee Prices Fall Sharply as Global Production Concerns Recede

May arabica coffee (KCK25) Thursday closed down -13.20 (-3.37%), and May ICE robusta coffee (RMK25) closed down -86 (-1.58%).

Coffee prices Thursday added to sharp Wednesday's losses, with arabica falling to a 1-month nearest-futures low and robusta dropping to a 2-1/4 month nearest-futures low.  Coffee prices fell on forecasts for rain in Brazil that would ease dryness concerns.  Meteorologist Climatempo has forecast widespread showers for Brazil's coffee-growing regions into next week.  

Coffee prices this week initially moved higher, with arabica posting a 3-week high on Wednesday due to weather concerns in Brazil and Vietnam.   Cooxupe, Brazil's largest arabica coffee co-operative, said high temperatures and below-normal rainfall last month in Brazil would negatively affect coffee yields this year.  Brazil is the world's largest producer of arabica coffee.
