Cocoa Futures Market News and Commentary

Cocoa Prices Finish Sharply Higher on a Slumping Dollar

May ICE NY cocoa (CCK25) Friday closed up +423 (+5.23%), and May ICE London cocoa #7 (CAK25) closed up +221 (+3.69%).

Cocoa prices Friday settled sharply higher as a selloff in the dollar (DXY00) to a 3-year low prompted short-covering in cocoa futures.  Friday's rally in the British pound (^GBPUSD) to a 1-week high limited gains in London cocoa as the stronger pound weighs on cocoa priced in terms of sterling.

On Wednesday, NY cocoa fell to a 3-week low, and London cocoa dropped to a 5-month low due to concern that consumer demand for cocoa and cocoa products will decline as the global trade war escalates and tariffs boost already-high cocoa prices.  On Thursday, Barry Callebaut AG, one of the world's biggest chocolate makers, cut its annual sales guidance in the face of high cocoa prices and tariff uncertainty.

Cocoa prices have been on the defensive over the past two months, and NY cocoa fell to a 4-3/4 month low on March 21 due to an improving supply outlook.  ... Read more
