Dollar Weakness Sparks Short Covering in Sugar

May NY world sugar #11 (SBK25) Tuesday closed up +0.25 (+1.30%), and May London ICE white sugar #5 (SWK25) closed up +2.30 (+0.42%).

Sugar prices Tuesday recovered from 1-week lows and settled moderately higher as a decline in the dollar index (DXY00) sparked short covering in sugar futures.  Sugar prices have rallied over the past two weeks, with NY sugar posting a 1-month high last Tuesday and London sugar posting a 4-month high on signs of lower global sugar production.

On March 13, Unica reported that cumulative 2024/25 Brazil Center-South sugar output through February fell -5.6% y/y to 39.822 MMT.  Also, on March 12, the Indian Sugar and Bio-energy Manufacturers Association cut its 2024/25 India sugar production forecast to 26.4 MMT from a January forecast of 27.27 MMT, citing lower cane yields.

Meanwhile, the International Sugar Organization (ISO) on March 6 raised its 2024/25 global sugar deficit forecast to -4.88 MMT from a November forecast of -2.51 MM... Read more
